Premiere: Spirit Animal Go Back to Middle School On ‘BST FRNDS’

“We really got a kick out of this idea of flipping the ‘aren’t we all just having a raging blast together!’ party anthem on its side by excluding this one imaginary person,” Steve Cooper, of New York City’s Spirit Animal explains of their new “BST FRNDS.” The song is a riotous blast of energy, with a hand-clap beat that feels tailor-made for maximum crowd engagement, call-and-response, shout-along vocal hooks, and a considerably harder edge than on their stand out “The Black Jack White.”
“It’s this weird situation where the listener looks around thinking, ‘I know he’s not talking about me.’ Somehow that makes it entirely inclusive, since everyone’s doing it. It’s preposterous and childish — the kind of nanny-nanny boo-boo vibe you don’t really get to act on once you leave high school, or middle school really.”
Fortunately, when you’re in a rock band, you get to be in middle school forever.
